I'm not sure about anyone else on here, but I find the design & manufacture of parts really interesting. There's a short 3 page interview with Aussie company Input Bmx here that you may want to read. I like the principles they work to, an Australian Profile I suppose.

That was cool, and their sprocket sounds rad. Apparently I can run a spline drive on my united Nash cranks, but only lhd. Without wanting to change my (rhd) rear hub, any reason why I couldn't just flip the cranks?

All sprockets should have the bore machined and then the teeth pattern in one hit, I'd be surprised at any that weren't.
If you flipped your cranks your pedal threads would be on the wrong side and your pedals would also be on the wrong side (and possibly undo themselves).
The old Odyssey Southgate pedal was made for just this reason. It was symmetrical so you could flip your cranks to run leftside drive if you're feet were of that persuasion.
